Email dcheninmoreno@gmail.com

In small groups of 2–3, Jacksonville students ages 5–18 work on posture, bow control, playing in tune, rhythm and music reading. They also learn to listen to one another, blend their sound and follow cues. Beginners are welcome.

Cohort size: 2–3 • Length: 45–60 minutes • Levels: brand new to advancing

Cohorts & Placement

I group students by age and experience to give them an appropriate level of challenge.

  • Pre-Reader (Ages 5–7): posture/bow games, short rhythms
  • Foundations (Ages 8–12): reading fluency, steady tone, early shifting prep
  • Ensemble Growth (Ages 10–14): two-part textures, dynamics, rhythm independence
  • Advancing (Ages 13–18): vibrato/shifting, phrasing, chamber-style skills

A short placement chat or trial lesson helps me find the right group for your child.

Curriculum Snapshot

  • Technique: posture, bow path, left-hand frame, tone, early shifting (as appropriate)
  • Music: age-appropriate pieces students enjoy playing
  • Reading: note naming, finger patterns, rhythm fluency
  • Rhythm Lab: clapping, subdivision, metronome games
  • Listening & Blend: dynamics, balance, matching tone
  • Performance Etiquette: tuning, stage cues, count-ins, endings

Learning in a Group

  • Motivation from playing with others
  • Classical fundamentals: holding the cello, moving the bow, positioning the left hand and producing a clear tone
  • Ensemble skills: listening, balancing sound, and starting and ending together
  • Weekly goals and realistic practice time
  • Class performances to help students build confidence on stage

How It Works

  1. Say hello. Tell me your child’s age, experience, goals and schedule.
  2. Placement. I recommend a group and lesson length (45–60 minutes).
  3. First two weeks. Shared basics: posture, bow hold, group rhythm habits.
  4. Weekly flow. Technique warm-up, then pieces, reading and rhythm, then playing through together.
  5. Showcase. Celebrate progress with a class performance.
